Ministry Topics Below: The Memorial Garden was created by the vestry at the May 13, 2002 meeting to provide a beautiful, peaceful and economical alternative for the burial of parishoners and their loved ones. At the same time a Memorial Garden Fund was established to provide the financing for the construction and maintenance of the garden. The initial funding of $5,000 was provided by part of a bequest from the estate of Oscar Kincaid. The garden was dedicated by the Rector on May 19,2002. The memorial garden serves as a final resting place for the ashes of parishioners and their loved ones, which are laid to rest below a green lawn behind a low brick wall across the Cornelia street border under a flowering tree and a font. Instead of individual markers on the grounds, brass name plaques are placed on a boulder in the memorial garden to commemorate those interred. A chart showing the placement of the remains is maintained in the church office. A fee of $350 will be requested for each individual interred in the garden. These fees go to the Memorial Garden Fund. Additional donations may also be directed to the fund to buy gifts such as benches or landscaping. Interested persons may contact the church office during business hours, Monday thru Friday. At the moment the Property Committee has 5 full members as well as the informal but invaluable attendance of Rich Millan and Carl Weltner. In addition, Barbara Bush has volunteered to head-up a group to address the actual grounds so we are looking for people who have knowledge, muscle or interest in doing a little gardening with Barbara. We guarantee you will have fun, and you might learn something. We want to address the grounds as a whole, but the flower-beds out front and the memorial garden are concern number 1. The property itself consists of 3 buildings which as a group are categorized as historic. To those who have to take care of them, they are categorized as old. However, thanks to the loving care of parishioners past and present, they are in relatively good shape. Sections of walkways and parts of the stairways have to be replaced, a large tree in front of the Wilson house has us a bit concerned and the walls around the property are beginning to bulge a little. We also want to do some plastering in the church hall. If anyone has knowledge or skill in any of these areas, please contact Tim O'Donnell (973) 334-4559 or Elaine in the church office.(973) 334-3655. Dates for our work days will be published soon. Both of last year's were very well attended and tons was accomplished. We want to keep the momentum going so we might offer an alternate day for those who can't attend the first but want to be useful. Suggestions are welcome. Stewardship is about taking care of, being responsible for and following your heart with your commitment. It is very much how you live your life. It is being thankful for God's blessings and feeling called to share those gifts with others. It is a reminder that all that we have is by the grace of God. How we choose to use those gifts is up to us, but it should be a very considered choice. In the St. John's community, it comes from supporting the church in physical and financial ways. We count on your time, talents and treasure to nuture our growth and to continue to make a difference in our community. A financial stewardship commitment for the year is a yearly pledge of a certain dollar amount of support on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis. You can make or change a commitment by talking to the Stewardship chair. All information is confidential and a commitment should be something you thoughtfully consider before moving forward. All that I have and all that I am is by the grace of God. Live each day fully. The Altar Guild of St. John's actively makes our worship space at St. Johns' unique and special with the ritual decorations pertinent to each season. This ministry is historic dating back to the earliest times of the church, and yet kept up to date and fresh by the dedicated work of those who feel called to contribute through this ministry. If you feel so called, please contact the church office at 973-334-3655 to find out more about this important ministry at St. Johns. The Altar Guild provides special ways to commemorate or remember those whom we have lost. By contribution or donation to the Altar Guild our loved ones can be remembered with a lasting contribution to our worship life.
